The Treatment of Congenital Clubfoot by Ponseti Method
نویسندگان
چکیده
Clubfoot is a complex foot malformation that occurs separately from other bone and joint malformations. Beginning with the year 2003, the team of the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics of the Rehabilitation Clinical Hospital Cluj-Napoca was the first to have applied the Ponseti method in our country for the treatment of clubfoot. In the period 2011-2013, 51 children passed the inclusion criteria in this group: 33 boys and 18 girls. Correction with the Ponseti method required 1 to 7 casts. The period needed for corrections varied from 1 to 6 weeks. The percutaneous tenotomy of the Achilles’ tendon was necessary in 68 feet (92%). At the age of 18 months, 2 patients, i.e. 4 feet (5%) needed correction completion by postero-medial release. The Ponseti method is safe, efficient in the conservative treatment of clubfoot and decreases the number of surgical interventions needed for the correction of the deformation.

The Ponseti method is a safe and effective treatment for congenital clubfoot, and radically decreases the need for extensive corrective surgery. But a group of patients will still present with under corrected residual equinovarus deformities despite the proper use of the Ponseti method. About 25% of operated clubfeet will develop recurrence or show a marked residual deformity (recurrent clubf...

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the idiopathic congenital clubfoot deformity treated by Ponseti method to determine the different factors such as radiological investigations that may have relations with the risk of failure and recurrence in mid-term follow-up of the patients. Methods: Since 2006 to 2011, 226 feet from 149 patients with idiopathic congenital clubfoot were trea...

BACKGROUND Long-term success reports by Dr. Ponseti with the Ponseti method in the treatment of congenital idiopathic clubfoot have led to a renewed interest in this method among pediatric orthopedists. The purpose of this study is to evaluate mid-term effectiveness of Ponseti method for the treatment of congenital idiopathic clubfoot. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 49 patients (67 clubfeet)...

Background: Ultrasonographic evaluation of clubfoot is an objective method of severity assessment. The objective of this article is to assess the reliability of clubfoot severity assessment by sonographic evaluation of talonavicular angle (TNA) and the reliability of assessing change in angle on simulated Ponseti manipulation. Materials and methods: Twenty-six infants with unilateral idiopathic...
متن کاملHigher Rates of Achilles Tenotomy after a Didactic Session on Ponseti Method
We have conducted a retrospective study to know the impact of a didactic sitting on the Ponseti method of clubfoot management. We have compared the outcome of patients managed by orthopaedic residents who attended such a session with that of patients treated by residents who didn’t get this additional training. The results revealed that the frequency of PTA tenotomy was significantly higher in ...
